RetroSpace Characters: Survivors, Dr. Nebula and the Crew

The six survivors

Dev Blog 11 calls the survivors "milestones" in the story. You can recruit them, they move into the Janitors' Haven and unlock new mechanics: one opens tech gadget purchases, another opens weapon upgrades. The official deep-dive video adds a workbench, a shooting range and a laboratory to the list of things your base gains. Each survivor has an optional mission line with lore and "special loot you won't find anywhere else", and some of them change which ending you get. Finishing every one of them earns Hero we deserve (25G).

Character questions

How many survivors can you recruit in RetroSpace?

Six, according to Dev Blog 11. Each one you help moves to the Janitors' Haven and unlocks something there, such as the tech gadget shop, weapon upgrades, a workbench, a shooting range or a laboratory.

Do survivors affect the ending?

Yes, some of them. Dev Blog 11 says each survivor has an optional mission line and that "some of them can also affect which ending you'll get in the end".

Who is the main character in RetroSpace?

A nameless janitor who wakes from stasis on Aurora 5 with no memory of why he is there. Finding out who you are is listed among your opening objectives.

Who is Dr. Nebula?

The voice that contacts you over the radio at the start and guides you toward the Nexus Plaza garden. The game sets "Who is Dr. Nebula?" as an objective, so we are not spoiling the answer here.
